This workshop begins the process of learning about audio production tools, techniques, and strategies. This is a very simple, very straightforward workshop that asks you to complete a fundamental set of editing tasks. Your experiences with audio editing will become much more complex over the coming weeks of class, but I wanted to offer you an opportunity to become familiar with the Adobe Audition interface and a couple of basic tools before asking you to invest more deeply.
In support of your work here, I have curated a set of 4 videos that introduce you to audio work in general and Audition in particular. You will not apply all of the knowledge presented in these videos during this first workshop, but you'll use all of the knowledge and more before your semester's work is complete. Watch the videos now as a beginning place, and then revisit them throughout the semester as you work to refine your audio editing knowledge and strategies. All 4 videos are drawn from the content catalog of Mike Russell from MusicRadioCreative.com. His instructions are easy to follow, and students generally find his explanations useful and meaningful. I relied on him heavily while I was initially learning about audio production, and I still seek him out when I need to acquire new knowledge.
This workshop requires you to edit an audio file that I have deliberately recorded with the content out of sequence. You must complete 2 tasks: unscramble the content using basic audio editing processes; and add theme music (both an intro stream and an end stream) from a collection of royalty-free tracks.
I provide 3 files through SVSU Canvas to support your work on this assignment. Retrieve the files and store them on your computer so you can access them more easily.
Once you feel ready to begin editing an audio file, I recommend that you listen to the workshop podcast file (mp3) and then search for some royalty-free music.
Note. You do not have to draw your theme music from the sources I provide. However, you must use music that is either royalty free or that you recorded (and to which you also hold the copyright).
Note. You only need 1 or 2 segments of the song you select. You may use the same 10-15 second segment for both the intro and the outro for your submission, or you may use different segments. Whatever you decide, import the file into your session in Adobe Audition, and then edit the song file down to the bit(s) you want.
Work in Adobe Audition to complete this workshop. As you begin, create a new Multitrack Session file.
Note. Because you will only edit existing content, you won't need to change any hardware settings for recording. However, working in a multitrack session file makes the process of adding theme music and sound effects much easier. Import the workshop mp3 file into Track 1, and import your music file into Track 2.
If you listened to the workshop audio file, you know that the work itself is relatively straightforward. It requires that you complete the following tasks.
Note. Under the File menu, select Export > Multitrack Mixdown > Entire Session.
When you name your file for submission, follow this pattern: YourLastName_WorkingWithAudio1.mp3.
Post your submission to the forum dedicated to this workshop on Canvas Discussions. Add a brief introduction where you identify your theme music by song and source. For example, my class videos use the track "Hubbub" from Purple-Planet.com. Attach your edited mp3 to your post.
