Assignments

This page provides an overview of the work that contributes to your final course grade. The assignment links connect you to descriptions for those projects and workshops. Sometime I embed instruction in a Canvas discussion forum instead, and will indicate when that is so. Note that I may choose to activate some or all assignment pages as we need them. Therefore, do not worry if you cannot access all of the descriptions at the beginning of the semester.

Your final course grade is computed from the points you earn on 6 projects and 10 workshops. Combined, these assignments total 1500 points. Review the category descriptions below to understand how workshops and projects differ in scope and complexity.

Projects

I use the term projects to categorize assignments that are significant undertakings, and that require development and refinement time that may span several weeks of the semester. You will complete 6 projects this semester that collectively contribute 1000 possible points to your course grade.

Each project description details several elements of the work, including learning pathways, content and design requirements, hints and tips for success, and submission guidelines. Follow the links below to access those descriptions.

Podcast Series Proposal (PSP). 100 points. The PSP project results in a brief but detailed description of the podcast series you propose to create during the course. The PSP is challenging because it requires you to conceptualize and develop a plan for producing a successful podcast series.
Podcast Series: Episodes 1-4 (PSE1, PSE2, PSE3, PSE4). 800 points (200 points for each episode). Projects PSE1-4 result in the production of the first 4 episodes of a podcast series. This assignment sequence is challenging because it requires cycles of preparation, audio production (recording, editing, development of complementary content), publishing, and production of related documents.
Podcast Teaser (PT). 100 points. The PT project results in 1 to 3 teaser advertisements that introduce listeners to your podcast series. The PT is challenging because you must distill the core concept and appeal of your podcast series into one or more brief audio moments.

Workshops

I use the term workshops to categorize assignments that provide knowledge building blocks to serve your work on projects. Such work can typically be completed within the space of a single class session. The concepts, strategies, and practices examined and executed during workshops build and reinforce your working knowledge of design relevant to the work of the course. You will complete 10 workshops this semester that collectively contribute 500 possible points to your course grade.

Podcast Analysis 1 and 2. 50 points each. For each workshop iteration, you conduct a systematic analysis of a podcast episode with the goal of assessing the qualities and characteristics that define the series it represents.
Working with Audio, Parts 1, 2, and 3. 50 points each. You engage in learning tools and strategies for recording and editing audio files. The links to individual workshop descriptions appear below.

Creating Transcripts. 50 points. You process a recorded file to produce a transcript using an appropriate service or tool.

Peer Review 1 and 2. 50 points each. You engage in examination of peer submission for Podcast Episodes 1 and 2, and invite review of your own contributions.

Podcast Creator Summit. 50 points. You participate in a class discussion of peer podcast series.
